Persecution, Resistance and Struggle for Freedom Memorial, 2013/2015
Concrete element, flip-dot displays, microcontroller, 54 × 215 × 23 cm
In collaboration with Maria Anwander
The memorial is dedicated to people from Hernals (XVII district of Vienna) who fought against fascism, echoing their individual decisions to make a stand against the terror of National Socialism. To commemorate these persons their names are shown on flip dot displays in a continuous loop. Other than with general and abstract symbols of remembrance, here the focus of attention is on every single one of these persons. This approach allows the viewers to identify with the victims and has the potential to trigger a process of reflection on the courage of one’s convictions and one’s own behaviour in difficult social situations.
